The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits more than 18,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. The Joint Commission is an independent not-for-profit organization which stands as the nation's predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. JCAHO accredits the following types of healthcare organizations:  Ambulatory Care and Office-Based Surgery; Behavioral Health Care; Health Care Networks and Managed Care Plans; Home Care, Home Infusion Services, Hospice and Home Medical Equipment; Hospitals; Laboratories; Long Term Care, Assisted Living and Long Term Care Pharmacies.
